Grease Clog Causes Sewage Spill in Dacula

More than 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled into a tributary of the Apalachee River.

DACULA, GA -- More than 2,000 gallons of sewage spilled into a tributary of that Apalachee River in Dacula on Saturday, county officials say.

A grease clog caused the 2,351-gallon spill, according to the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources.

The spill happened at a manhole at 3438 Jordan Lea Lane, according to a state-mandated report.

In addition to grease, "rags and flushables" were listed as secondary causes of the spill.

The Department of Water Resources was notified at 5:34 p.m. and the overflow was stopped at 7:18 p.m., the report said.

To help mitigate effects of the spill, the department raked the area and spread lime. Signs letting residents now of the spill were placed in the area and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified.

It was the third sewage spill county workers have had to deal with in the past week.
