Key to Success: Matt Kim, his mother, and his sister relocated to the United States from South Korea nine years ago. Kim’s father stayed behind in Korea to work and support the family. Kim said the goal was to provide an opportunity to attend the top American colleges and with the Mill Creek senior slated to attend MIT in the fall, β€œMission complete,” he said.

While at Mill Creek, Kim founded the two science-based organizations and was a member of many others. He founded the National Science Honors Society and the Science Bowl. Kim said the National Science Honors Society has become a very beneficial organization to the Mill Creek community.

β€œWe had over 50 members and initiated our first science fair at Mill Creek,” Kim said. β€œWe sent students to the county science fair where we won awards. It was a really big honor for Mill Creek as a whole.”

In addition to his participation in multiple science clubs, Kim has been very active in pursuing scholarships. He was a semifinalist in the Coca-Cola Scholars Program and a finalist in the Gates-Millennium scholarship program. The recipients of the Gates-Millennium awards have not yet been announced. Kim did receive an Atlanta Toyota scholarship.

Though he has achieved so much at Mill Creek, Kim said he is excited to head to Cambridge, Mass., to attend MIT. He attended the MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) summer program, and said his participation in MITES led him to the decision MIT was the place for him.

β€œI went to the MIT summer program,” Kim said. β€œIt was really selective with a five percent acceptance rate. Because I got into that program, I could see the MIT campus and it really encouraged me to apply there.”
