Mom Who Battled Flesh-Eating Bacteria '1 Step Closer' to Being Home

Cindy Martinez is ready to begin therapy, her husband said in an update.

Cindy Martinez, the Gwinnett County mother of two who has battled flesh-eating bacteria and its effects since May, continues to show a fighting attitude in her recovery, her husband said.

David Martinez began an update on Facebook Sunday with the following words:

“I’m happy to announce that Cindy is one step closer to recovery and being able to come home.”

He went on to say Cindy was in a rehabilitation center and eager to begin therapy. She is recovering from multiple amputations caused by the potentially deadly bacteria. In late June, she had parts of her legs, an arm and fingers of the remaining hand amputated.

“Cindy is excited and ready to begin therapy. It’s great to see her laugh and smile as she continues to have a fighting attitude,” David Martinez posted. “Cindy had not spent time with the kids for about seven weeks. It’s great to finally spend quality time together. We thank everyone for all the continued prayers and support.”

How Cindy contracted the bacteria hasn’t been determined. She has been battling it since at least late May, when she went to the emergency room complaining of shoulder pain.
