Decatur High School Culinary Students Bake For Good

The culinary arts class will learn how to bake bread from scratch through a new program.

DECATUR, GA — Decatur High School students are preparing to bake for a cause. The culinary arts class is participating in a free outreach program where they will learn the math and science of making bread from scratch.

Bake for Good is the King Arthur Baking Company’s program for students in grades fourth through 12th. The program has three goals: learn, bake, and share, according to its website.

“Many students have not made a loaf of bread before and this will allow them to explore how to do so,” said DHS Culinary Arts Teacher, Jules Shelkoff in a news release. “This program is an incredible opportunity for our students to learn the process of making a loaf of bread from start to finish.”

With supplies from King Arthur, students will bake the bread recipe together in school to take home. The recipe makes two loaves, one to keep and one to share with someone in need or as an act of kindness.

The program allows students to pick from three different ways to Bake for Good.

  1. Live Remote Demonstration: Live Remote Demos are designed for larger school groups, such as an entire grade level at a school.
  2. Self-Directed: The Self-Directed program is designed for smaller classes and groups to learn together. Perfect for individual classes, after-school clubs, scouts, and home school groups.
  3. FCS, CTE & Culinary Arts: This option is designed for FCS or Culinary teachers who have participated in the program in the past or are comfortable with bread making and want to teach the lesson themselves.

“Over the years, we have learned that students love to share what they make in culinary with their friends and family," Shelkoff said. "In doing so, it allows others to see and understand what we do in culinary. By applying for and receiving supplies from King Arthur, our students are able to do so.”
