📰 News we're reading

1. Laurens County Commission defends tax increase (courierheraldtoday.com) — Laurens County leaders are proposing a 31% property tax increase that would add about $150 a year to the bill on a $200,000 home, including school taxes, affecting homeowners in Dublin and across the county. Officials say the hike is needed to sustain expanded public safety services and rising costs, while a November FLOST sales tax referendum could later offset much of the increase.

2. Georgia Business Focus: Walmart+ Gas Savings, Love's Investment, Air Force Hiring, American Idol Relocates (41nbc.com) — Love’s Travel Stops has just reopened its remodeled Dublin location, marking the upgrade with a ribbon-cutting and a $5,000 gift to a children’s hospital. The project is part of a major statewide investment plan, while other Georgia business news includes Walmart+ fuel savings, a Warner Robins Air Force hiring event, and American Idol’s move to the Atlanta area.

3. Middle School Cougars continue to win (themonticellonews.com) — Piedmont Academy’s middle school Cougars recently topped Trinity Christian-Dublin 40–25 in a hard-fought game that stayed close until late in the fourth quarter. Dublin-area families can look ahead to a rematch this Thursday evening at Piedmont, where coaches expect another tough, competitive matchup between the same two teams.

4. Southeast Georgia Lottery player wins $3 million on scratcher (11alive.com) — A Fantasy 5 ticket sold in Dublin recently hit for nearly $185,000, putting a major Georgia Lottery win right in the local area. The prize is one of several big payouts statewide, including multimillion-dollar scratcher wins in Liberty County, Thomaston, Augusta, McDonough, and Warner Robins, underscoring how much money is circulating through Georgia’s lottery games.
