Digital Files Simplify Storage

Save your digital files on disc. Make three copies--a working copy, one to store at home or your office and another to store in a different location.

In the good old days you had to fuss with negatives. They were fragile, hard to see and tough to catalog. What a revolution with digital files. But you get some new headaches too. First of all, you generate so many files now because it costs nothing to pull the trigger. Your computer is over flowing like the Mississippi before you know it.

I love hard drives, but, speaking from experience, it's not if, but when will they fail.

My drill is to download as soon as possible. Then I make three copies of the shoot on disc. One is a working copy,  the second gets stashed in my office, and the third disc gets stored away from my office usually at my wife's office.

This has served me well. When I got lazy and didn't follow my own advice it, I regretted it.

There is debate over the life of a disc. I'm not debating. This works for me for right now and the near future. Maybe as long as 100 years. I don't think I'll be worried about it then.
