Is Your House Historic?
Your house may qualify for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Did you know that your house may qualify for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, our country’s official roster of historically significant buildings, monuments, and sites? According to the federal government, if your house is 50 years or older, it is “historic,” thus eligible for inclusion in the National Register.
Of course, being old enough is not the only criterion for the National Register. Other things need to be considered, including whether a house is connected to an important event, person, or has a certain architectural design. But, age is the most basic benchmark.
Therefore, houses that people usually don’t think of as “historic,” such as ranches and split-levels, may qualify depending on their individual circumstances. After all, many of those houses were built shortly after World War II for returning GIs and their families. The definition of “historic” is no longer limited to mansions or other stately properties.
