The World of Wellness: A tax on sugar? Really?

Today's topics include: The Pfizer birth control pill recall for birth control pills, adults and our love for SUGAR!

~ Well it didn't take long for the speculation to start: If women unintentionally get pregnant while taking the defective birth control pills that Pfizer recalled this week,  would they, sue? As you may have heard earlier this week, after uncovering a packaging error that included too many active tablets in some packets and not enough in others, Pfizer has recalled 1 million packages of pills. Women have been cautioned to use alternative contraceptive methods because they were at greater risk of becoming pregnant. So, now there is discussion that if a woman becomes pregnant while on these pills that she may have the legal right to sue? In this litigious society, I am sure that some people will attempt it.

~ Having been a registered nurse for 20 years, I realize and understand that shots are never fun, no matter what your age. According to a report by the CDC, 45,000 Americans die each year from vaccine–preventable diseases. Despite that fact, U.S. adults are not getting the immunizations they need. The three vaccines that were focused on are Tetanus, diphtheria and Pertussis. These three slightly showed small increases among adults in 2010. So, why are adults not protecting themselves? It is possible that it is a simple lack of information and irregular visits to the doctor. Adult vaccines are recommended only for certain age or if you have a high–risk medical condition or certain occupation or travel. So, go see your doctor.  As my dad used to say, it'll do ya good.

~ Wow! Did you hear the latest discussion about sugar? Scientists at the University of California argue that sugar is toxic and needs to be taxed and controlled. They are now saying that sugar poses enough health risk that it should be considered a controlled substance. We have all experienced a “sugar high." I really doubt that Americans would look favorably on regulating one of their favorite vices. According to the American Heart Association the average U.S. adult takes in 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. Health and wellness experts including me agree that sugar is one of the main reasons we have an obesity pandemic occurring here in America.
