Here are the top stories in Duluth today:

  1. Georgia Gwinnett College has been putting extra effort into the research and production costs of biodiesel fuel. Students and faculty amongst many discipline areas have been participating. This week, Evelyn Calina, a Georgia Gwinnett College Student who was involved in a group of six students working on the project, won the American Chemical Society Undergraduate Student Award. This award is annually awarded to about 20 students nation-wide, and Calina is one of 5 students from our local college to win the award. (Press Release Desk )
  2. The City of Duluth has added about $44,000 in funds to the 2022 fiscal year specifically designated for police vehicle maintenance. The money will go towards making the fleet low-maintenance and reliable for all officer's vehicles. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  3. Gwinnett police are currently searching for a white colored work van and its driver after it struck and killed a Norcross man who was walking in a crosswalk Tuesday evening. Police say that they are looking for any witnesses that were at the scene of the hit-and-run, hoping to get more information. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  4. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the death of two inmates at the Gwinnett County Jail. The statement from the sheriff's office says that an emergency team responded to a call where they found two inmates laying on the ground unconscious after staff members tried live saving techniques. The names of the inmates have not been released. (FOX 5 Atlanta)
  5. Duluth Police de-escalated a mental health incident in Parson's Alley on August 24. They reported to the scene after a call to the police station stating that there was a man acting erratically in front of Nacho Daddy. An officer reports that the man asked him if he was able to shoot him, and the officer took it upon himself to start using de-escalation strategies to save the man's life. Duluth Police say that they have responded to 93 calls involving mental health issues, and none of them have resulted in use of force. (CBS46 News Atlanta)
