Here are the top stories in Duluth today:

  1. Our neighbors in Peachtree Corners have launched some grant programs to assist local businesses and nonprofits who were financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The city has been awarded with $16.4 million in efforts to keep the doors open for small businesses who qualify. (metroatlantaceo.com)
  2. Cicely Lewis, the school librarian at Meadowcreek High School, is a finalist for the $1 million prize from the Varkey Foundation. This award is granted to an educator or school employee who has made an effort to make a huge difference in their profession. Cicely Lewis created a program in 2017 called "Read Woke" after she got many questions from students surrounding immigration and police shootings of Black boys and men. Since the creation of this program, Lewis has created a couple of other "woke" programs to help benefit the students and the community, and has even been congratulated by former FLOTUS, Michelle Obama. Keep up the great work, Cicely! The Meadowcreek cluster is so proud of the work you are doing for our community. ( The Atlanta Journal Constitution)
  3. Last week, there was an unidentified dead body that was found in Lake Lanier. In the early hours of yesterday morning, the man was identified as 42-year-old Nermin Rustempasic who is from Duluth. It has been said that the man's body was in the water for at least a week before he was found. It is unclear what happened since the body was found with no wounds or signs of foul play. If you have any information about the situation, contact local investigators. (WSBTV)
  4. The Gwinnett police have arrested 31-year-old Lawrenceville man, Ray Charles Evans, in death of 29-year-old woman, Shakiyla Sample, who was shot to death in her home early Monday morning. (Fox 5)
  5. The Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful leadership team has tabled the conversation about litter conversation in our local towns due to the recent COVID-19 surge in Georgia. While they are super sad about having to cancel the event, the conversation will hopefully continue in 2022. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
