He and another man, John Chong, arrived and were escorted to a back room to meet a friend.
According to police reports, the unnamed friend was in the room with three men. When Yang approached to give (removed) friend a hug, one of the men got up and said, "No! No! No!" and pushed Yang, police say.
Yang and Chong approached the man, who pulled a handgun and pointed it at Yang's face. Chong pushed the gunman's arm as a shot was fired, striking Yang.
Everyone ran out of the restaurant, police say, and Yang's friend drove him to the hospital.
Police are seeking the two men in the photograph above. They are believed to have left the restaurant in a black SUV.
