Here are the top stories today in Duluth:
- Due to recent growth is the residential population, the City of Duluth has increased the number of days Republic Waste Service will be out and about for waste pickup. The residential service will still visit homes once a week, but it will pick up on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. depending on the zone of your address. The zone of your address will be inserted with the 2021 Tax Bills. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- The Gwinnett Young Professionals have announced the 2021-2022 cohort and leaders of the Journey Leadership Institute class. The class is a nine-month long course that features adults aged 21-35 living or working in Gwinnett County to assist them with career growth. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)
- Gwinnett mom, Jeana Buckner, got creative at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic when classes switched from in-person learning to virtual by creating a program called TwiddleBugs. It helps children with autism bridge the learning gap of having virtual classes. She created this program for her own 5-year-old child who has autism because she knew that her child needed more speech and play therapy . After she invited some other children and parents to the learning group, the popularity skyrocketed. Her program has even gained attention across the country, and she has gotten a grant for more than a thousand dollars to help with allocating resources for the program. (CBS46 News Atlanta)
- Joy Mertzig became Georgia Gwinnett College's women's soccer all-time career scoring leader on Sunday. She scored 3 goals in the win against Dalton State College. - Duluth residents have begun to weigh in on their unique visions for the future of Gwinnett Place Mall. A Duluth local has given the idea of making the first floor into a shopping area, and make the top level into affordable housing opportunities. Other ideas residents have pushed include; apartments, a teen center, restaurants, and support for the international community in Duluth. (Gwinnettdailypost.com)
