A Powder Springs college student was one of the five people killed when the vehicle they were riding in was involved in a violent accident on an interstate just outside of Savannah Wednesday morning.

Junior Emily Clark was confirmed as one of the fatalities in the wreck by Georgia Southern University President Brooks A. Keel in a Wednesday afternoon announcement. Four other Georgia Southern students were killed in the crash, with two other students receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

The other students killed in the wreck were Morgan Bass of Leesburg, Abbie Deloach of Savannah, Catherine (McKay) Pittman of Alpharetta, and Caitlyn Baggett of Millen. Brittney McDaniel of Reidsville and Megan Richards of Loganville were injured in the crash.

According to the Statesboro Herald, the students’ vehicle was involved in a seven-car pileup on eastbound I-16 in Bryan County at approximately 5:45 a.m. Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith told the Herald that a big rig collided with traffic which had been stopped due to an accident which occurred at approximately 2 a.m.

Three semis, two pickups, and two cars were involved in the 5:45 a.m. wreck; one of the vehicles was seen to be engulfed in flames, Bryan County Emergency Services Director Freddy Howell told the Herald.

“Every one of our students contributes in no small measure, to the Eagle Nation,” Keel said in a statement. “The loss of any student, especially in a tragic way, is particularly painful. Losing five students is almost incomprehensible.”

The president said that flags would fly at half mast on campus on Thursday and asked that anyone who needed emotional support during this trying time to make use of the university’s counseling services.
