Driver Who Killed Pedestrian in Marietta Arrested

The 18-year-old faces second degree homicide by vehicle and other charges.

The 18-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of a minivan which spun out of control and killed an elderly man in Marietta over the weekend weekend will face charges, police said Wednesday.

According to WSB-TV, Ashli Mitchell has been arrested and charged with second degree homicide by vehicle, failure to maintain her lane, driving too fast for conditions, a child restraint violation, insufficient tread depth on her tires, and driving without a license. She is being held at the Cobb County jail on a $30,000 bond, according to records.

According to 11 Alive, Mitchell’s minivan was traveling northbound along Franklin Road on Sunday afternoon when she lost control of the vehicle. The minivan left the roadway, hit a pedestrian, then went through a fence and down an embankment.

The pedestrian, Joe Lewis Burns, was rushed to WellStar Kennestone Hospital where he died, Marietta police told 11 Alive.

Mitchell and two passengers were also taken to the hospital. The occupants of the minivan, including a toddler, were treated for non life-threatening injuries.
