Inmate dies after choking herself with holding cell phone cord, Hall County investigators say (nowgeorgia.com) — Hall County and state investigators are examining how a 72-year-old woman died after reportedly choking herself with a holding-cell phone cord at the Hall County Jail in Gainesville. Officials say she was found unresponsive about 40 minutes after arrival, then taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where she was pronounced dead as the GBI now leads the inquiry.

2. Man indicted in Georgia counterfeit Social Security card scheme (fox5atlanta.com) — Federal prosecutors say a 41-year-old man in Gainesville has been indicted on 18 counts tied to allegedly selling counterfeit Social Security cards with real victims' identities and possessing an illegal firearm. Agents reportedly bought several fake cards during an undercover operation, seized more during his arrest, and found a semi-automatic pistol at his home, with the suspect now held as a flight risk.

Students sharpen skills on Peru study abroad (ung.edu) — A junior from Gainesville recently sharpened her Spanish and broadened her worldview on a study abroad trip to Peru, funded partly by an Honors scholarship. She and classmates describe how immersion boosted their language confidence and cultural understanding, while the university is already accepting applications for the next Peru program running May 21–June 27, 2027.
