Charter Students Learn Spanish Culture

Their guest speaker was an expert in Spanish literature and a native of Madrid, Spain.

Fifth grade Spanish students at Cherokee Charter Academy had a special guest to help them learn about Spanish culture. It was part of CCA Spanish instructor Maria Medal’s project to have her students experience the diverse cultures in countries where Spanish is spoken. The guest speaker was Dr. Olga Godoy, an expert in Spanish literature and an assistant professor of Spanish at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Georgia. Dr. Godoy has even helped former president Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn with their Spanish language skills! She is a native of Madrid, Spain and talked with the students via Skype from Americus. From Dr. Godoy, the students learned about special Spanish holidays and festivals and why Spaniards like to take an afternoon “siesta” (a nap or rest). Because it’s hot in Spain!
