Cherokee County Fire & Emergency Services responded to a structure fire around 2:30 yesterday afternoon, on Ball Ground Highway, about a half mile from the Walmart north of Canton. Cherokee County 911 received a call from a caller on a job site behind the location reporting that smoke and flames was coming from a 1-story residential structure. Incident Commander, Brian Ward started, “Crews on scene deployed hose lines for offensive fire attack and search operations in the structure and hose lines on the side to help protect exposures. The offensive fire attack and the primary search were conducted simultaneously extinguishing the fire and getting an all clear for no one inside. The winds created additional fire spread outside of the structure in the wooded areas. Crews extinguished the fast spreading woods fire preventing the structures next door from fire damage.” According to Cherokee County Fire Investigator, Cheri Collett, the cause appeared to be an electrical fire in the laundry room. Collett also stated that there was moderate damage from the fire throughout the house. Fortunately, the house was unoccupied at the time. Traffic had to be diverted until the area was cleared. Cherokee County firefighters got the fire under control at approximately 3 o’clock. No injuries were reported.
