Fugitive Escapes, Captured Again in Cherokee

Timothy Smith, 39, kicked through a patrol vehicle's window and escaped, but was re-captured Thursday afternoon in Canton.

A man who was wanted on an array of charges in both Pickens and Cherokee County has been arrested.

Deputies with the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office arrested Timothy Smith, 39, of Waleska at his home on Old Mill Road, Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said.

Smith was wanted in Cherokee on obstruction and driving with a suspended license charges. He was also wanted by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office after he led deputies there on a chase in the southwestern part of the county.

While handcuffed, in custody and on the way to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, Baker said Smith kicked out the window of a patrol vehicle, escaped through the window and fled on foot — all of which happened along Marietta Highway near Bells Ferry Road in Canton.

Smith returned to the patrol car and tried to steal the vehicle, but was apprehended again, Baker stated.

Smith is now in custody and faces possession of methamphetamine, possession of Xanax, possession of drug-related objects, escape, misdemeanor obstruction and interference with government property charges.
