Holly Springs Officer Joins Cherokee SWAT Unit

Officer Tom Harris was one of two candidates to be chosen for the unit

There are many facets to a police officer’s job, from patrolling neighborhoods to answering calls, and some of those calls can require more than just a standard response.

S.W.A.T, or Special Weapons And Tactics, is utilized when necessary, and the Holly Springs Police Department is proud to announce that Officer Tom Harris is now a team member of the Cherokee County Multi-Agency S.W.A.T. Unit.

Tryouts were held June 24-25, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with no reprieve in between.

Officer Harris was one of two candidates chosen to be a part of this team. The try-outs started with a vigorous physical fitness test and firearms qualifications. Afterward there were 18 hours of classroom training, officer rescue scenarios and repelling.

In addition to his standard duties as a patrol officer for Holly Springs, officer Harris will now be training at least two times a month with this specialized unit.

Officer Harris, a native from Illinois, has always wanted to be on S.W.A.T., and has completed several specialized classes in the past year to prepare him for this endeavor.
