Sequoyah's Alexander Headed to Mount Union
From Canton, GA, to Canton, OH, we'll be able to see one of our own on ESPN next season.
It was a magical season and career in sports for Sequoyah High School standout, Brandon Alexander. This senior was a 4-year letterman in both basketball and football. Although he excelled at both sports, including guiding the Chiefs basketball team, the best in the county’s history, to an undefeated regular season and a No.1 state ranking for the first time ever, Alexander’s lifelong passion has been football. Since playing with many of his current teammates since fourth grade, he has never known wearing any colors other than the black and gold.
This week, that is going to change to black and purple as Alexander signs a scholarship to play football for Division III, University of Mount Union. The ten-time national champions only recruit the top athletes for their football program. The results speak for themselves as the Raiders have played in the national championship game 15 out of the past 18 seasons and have only lost two conference games going back to 1996.
Having been offered opportunities to play in higher profile programs like the University of Oregon, Georgia Southern and Southern Miss, Alexander felt that the best educational opportunities, the best shot at winning a national title, playing immediately as an incoming freshman and becoming an All-American reside at the University of Mount Union.

“I felt like they (the coaching staff) wanted me to be a part of their team more than the other programs who made offers to me. Winning at the next level is important to me and I wanted to play with a program that would compete at the highest level within their division and Mt. Union is certainly accustomed to doing that. The campus was beautiful, the players I met were awesome and everyone I talked to about Mt. Union prior to making my visit knew a lot about the program and their tradition of winning. The Raider program is better than any Div. II program I visited. It was also important that I get a degree from a University that would earn instant respect when being reviewed by potential employers once I complete my college experience,” said Alexander upon returning from his trip to the campus just 10 minutes from Canton, OH.
