STARBASE 1.5 -- Mission Accomplished!

Cherokee Charter Academy is one of only five STARBASE schools in Georgia and the only public charter school in Cherokee County.

One of the goals of Cherokee Charter Academy’s new STARBASE 1.5 club is for students to explore potential careers and observe STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) applications in the real world. That mission was accomplished in a big way with the program’s visit to the Cherokee County Regional Airport in Ball Ground.

First, students learned about the history of the airport and its role in the county and the southeast. They also explored a B-17 Bomber (one of only a dozen of these WWII airplanes left) and other vintage military aircraft.

Cherokee County firefighters staged a demonstration for the kids in how firefighting foam can used to suppress fires in places like airports.

Before they left, STARBASE students had a gift for the airport; they decorated the huge holiday tree in the airport terminal with paper airplanes and other decorations they’d made.

The STARBASE program is sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs.
