9 String Theory Concert at Autrey Mill Nature Preserve on April 16th

Autrey Mill is so excited to welcome this wonderful duo!

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center, in its mission to bring wonderful, eclectic talent to Johns’ Creek, is excited to welcome the extremely gifted duo, 9 String Theory, to its “Unplugged” stage, on Saturday night, April 16th. The finest instrumental music from the around the world finds a fresh new voice in 9 String Theory: the unique musical collaboration of domra virtuoso Angelina Galashenkova-Reed and award-winning classical guitarist John Huston. 9 String Theory performs music of great variety and intense virtuosity, evoking musical traditions both ancient and modern. Tickets are $23, or $18 for residents of Johns Creek or members of Autrey Mill. In addition to compensating our talented performers, the proceeds from ticket sales also contribute to the daily operations of this wonderful treasure that is Autrey Mill Nature Preserve. We begin at 7PM with a pre-show social gathering inside the Summerour House, with complimentary refreshments, then walk next door to the Old Warsaw Church for the indoor concert at 8PM. These concerts have been very popular, so please plan ahead!

Angelina Galashenkova-Reed, known as one of the greatest domra players in the world, was eight years old when she began her musical studies at the St. Petersburg Music School in Russia. As a child and teenager she won three junior competitions among domra players of North-Western Russia.
During her formative years at Musorgsky College of Music in St. Petersburg and the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, Angelina won top prizes and titles of “Laureate of Russia National Domra Competition” (1990) and “Laureate of International Folk Artists Competition” (1992).
Before moving to the USA in 2001, Angelina performed as a soloist with the famous Andreev Russian Folk Orchestra in St. Petersburg, the Police Orchestra of Moscow and numerous small ensembles. She was also classical mandolin soloist with Chamber Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Russia. As a concert performer, she performed throughout Russia, the United States (including a Carnegie hall debut in the 100 year Anniversary of Carnegie Hall in 1991), numerous European countries, Japan and Australia.
In the USA, Angelina has been involved with “Atlanta Balalaika Society” and “Balalaika and Domra Association of America” as member and soloist as well as pursuing a teaching career.

About John:

John Huston has distinguished himself as one of the most exciting and expressive guitarists of his generation. The Southern Arts Foundation has hailed him “…one of the finest young guitarists today”, Guitar International has praised him as “a formidable talent”, The Fort-Worth Star Telegram described his “considerable energy and impressive virtuosity”, and La Stampa has called his playing “…mesmerizing.” The accolades for Mr. Huston’s performance are numerous. He won First Prize in the 2001 Aranjuez Strings International Guitar Competition. Additionally, he has won prizes in a number of other major national and international competitions including the Concours International de Guitare de Lachine, the American String Teachers Association National Guitar Competition, and the National Federation of Music Clubs Guitar Competition.
John has performed in the finest concert halls in the Southeast United States, including Atlanta Symphony Hall, Spivey Hall, the Shwartz Center for Performing Arts, the fabulous Fox Theater, the Cobb Energy Center, Legacy Hall, and Hugh Hodgson Hall. John has been frequently invited to perform at international guitar festivals including the Guitar Foundation of America Convention, the Guitar on the Mediterranean Festival in Cervo, Italy, the Austin Peay State University Summer Guitar Workshop and Competition, the Fort Worth Guitar Guild Music Festival and the University of Louisville Guitar Festival and Competition. Additionally, John has recorded two solo discs: Three Centuries of Music for the Classical Guitar (1997), and Nocturno (2002). Guitar International hailed Nocturno as “a truly satisfying CD with great depth and a program rich in diversity with much to say…devastatingly beautiful… the performance is at once expansive and yet conveys the intimacy required for sustained interest.” John’s collaboration with guitarist Richard Todd resulted in the disc Pura Vida (2011) as the Huston-Todd Guitar Duo.
John has a varied and diverse performing schedule. In addition to frequent performances as 9 String Theory, in recent years John has performed with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Balalaika Society, the Atlanta Guitar Guild Orchestra, the DeKalb Symphony Orchestra, the Athens Chamber Singers, and the Morehouse and Spelman College choirs.
John is also a cancer survivor.
John holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Georgia, a Master’s degree in Music from Georgia State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Iowa. Since leaving Iowa, John has lived in his adopted home town of Atlanta, where he lives in the historic Inman Park neighborhood with his wife and young son. When not making or listening to music, John enjoys reading, biking, running, laughing and loving, and speculating on the true nature of all things.
