Happy Tiara Tuesday! Today’s tiara hails from Cambridge, England and was famously worn by Princess Diana on her wedding day! It’s the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, made with stunning diamonds and luscious pearls.
In 1913, Queen Mary, Princess Augusta’s granddaughter, commissioned a tiara just like the one that Princess Augusta owned in 1818. It consists of a lower band of diamonds and 19 arches above which also include diamonds. In between the arches and the lover knots, there are 19 drop-shaped pearls and above the arches are 19 diamonds on spikes. After Queen Mary’s death in 1953, the tiara passed to Queen Elizabeth II, with whom it remains today. She lent it to Princess Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles (1981-1996), but after Princess Diana’s premature death the tiara returned to Queen Elizabeth’s vault.
This tiara was famously worn by Princess Diana on her wedding day to Prince Charles, Prince of Wales in 1981. Queen Elizabeth II lent it to her and she wore it several times during her life, although she noted it was a bit heavy and she usually opted to wear the lighter Spencer tiara, from her own family’s collection.
What a beautiful tiara! The diamonds and pearls perfectly compliment each other as they move around the tiara, and it looks stunning on Princess Diana’s blonde hair and on Queen Mary’s darker brown hair!
This tiara is 100 years old this year! Hopefully it will make more appearances soon, perhaps on Kate Middleton! After all, there is no reason why the new Duchess of Cambridge shouldn’t wear the Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara!
