Former Hooch Lacrosse Players Honored

All 7 college players earn post-season accomplishments; Corrigan becomes Chattahoochee's first-ever Major League Lacrosse signee

Each of Chattahoochee High School’s seven former men’s lacrosse players active on college teams in 2018 collected a host of end-of-season accolades. And one of them, Ben Corrigan, became the first Hooch player in history to sign with a Major League Lacrosse team.

Corrigan, a senior midfielder and attackman for NCAA DII Lenoir-Rhyne University, joined the practice team of the Atlanta Blaze June 6. In 2016, the Blaze became the ninth team in MLL as an expansion team, playing its home games at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw.

Corrigan and the other six Hooch alumni athletes played for four colleges and universities in Georgia and North Carolina, all of which advanced to post-season competition in 2018.

Chris Berchock, CHS class of ’15, NCAA DIII Berry College junior attack, was named 2018 All-SAA Conference First Team. Berchock also was selected to the 2018 Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-South Region Team after helping the Vikings to a 12-4 record this season. Scoring a conference-best 47 goals in 2018, he finished the season with at least three goals in 10 different contests. He also passed five assists for the Vikings, rounding out the year with 52 points in his 16 games. Starting in 14 games, Berchock also added 33 ground balls and 94 shots for Berry, 65 of which were on goal. He earned honorable mention honors from the IMLCA.

Jackson Bryan, CHS class of ’16, NAIA Savannah College of Art & Design sophomore defender, was named First Team Independent All-Conference defender in 2018. Bryan scored 1 goal and 1 assist and had 38 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. He helped lead SCAD to its first Independent Conference Championship and appearance in the NAIA National Invitational tournament.

Jack Cioffi, CHS class of ’14, Savannah College of Art & Design senior midfielder, was selected Independent Conference First Team midfielder for the second consecutive year. He amassed 30 points this season, finished 11th in the conference in points per game and scored his 100th career point in 2018. A team captain in his junior and senior years, Cioffi was named a 2018 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Lacrosse Scholar Athlete, his fourth consecutive academic honor (2015-2018). He also collected post-season All-Conference accolades each of his four seasons. Named SCAD Men’s Lacrosse’s MVP for the third consecutive year, Cioffi helped to lead SCAD to its first Independent Conference Championship and appearance in the 2018 NAIA National Invitational tournament.

In addition to being signed to the Atlanta Blaze, Corrigan, CHS class of '14, was named All-South Atlantic Conference First Team in 2018 for the second consecutive year. In 2018, Corrigan led his team in assists with 36 in addition to 45 goals and 81 points. Corrigan, a three-time all-SAC honoree (2016-18), totaled six goals and eight assists in this year's two playoff games. He also earned 2018 USILA/Nike NCAA Division II All-American second-team honors.

Mason Hebert, CHS class of ’16, is a sophomore midfielder for MCLA Georgia Tech, which advanced to the MCLA National Championships in 2018 for the third consecutive year.

Cole Johnson, CHS class of ’16, Berry College sophomore midfielder, was named All-SAA Second Team. Competing in 16 games for the Vikings, Johnson scored 2 goals, passed 1 assist and picked up 49 ground balls on the year in 2018. He also caused 21 turnovers and added 8 shots, leading the Vikings to a second-place finish in the SAA.

Nick Zakucia, CHS class of '14, Berry College senior defender, was named an All-SAA First Team defender in 2018. He collected 28 ground balls in his 16 games for Berry, forcing nine turnovers and adding five shots. Behind Zakucia, who played for two seasons at NCAA DI University of Massachusetts-Lowell, the Vikings held opponents to 8.13 goals-against-average, while scoring 14.56 goals per game.
