The Johns Creek City Council on Monday approved an intergovernmental agreement with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office to house city inmates at its Detention Center in Dahlonega.

Lumpkin County will charge Johns Creek $35 per day per inmate to house, feed and transport the prisoners. Johns Creek previously had an agreement with the city of Pelham to house inmates. However, Pelham recently terminated its agreement with Johns Creek and other municipalities, as it decided to get out of the inmate housing business altogether.

Along with Johns Creek, the cities of Sandy Springs and Roswell have also had to enter into new agreements with other entities, as they also had contracts with Pelham.

Roswell chose to partner with Lumpkin County to house its inmates while Sandy Springs entered into an agreement with Pickens County to utilize its inmate housing services.

Following an investigation involving the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and city of Pelham, a guard at the southwest Georgia facility was charged with allegedly sexually assaulting an inmate from the city of Roswell, according to WSB-TV.
