Lumpkin County will charge Roswell $35 per day per inmate to house, feed and transport the prisoners. That rate is slightly lower than the $36 the city of Pelham charged Roswell to provide the service.
Pelham terminated its agreement with the city of Roswell when it decided to get out of the prisoner housing business altogether.
The move follows reports of a Roswell inmate accusing a guard at the Pelham facility of sexually assaulting her. According to WSB-TV, the woman made the report after she returned to Roswell, and the guard was charged following an investigation by Pelham and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Roswell will pay for the service from its Contract Services account within the Jail/Detention Center cost center of the police department, which was budgeted at $220,000 for fiscal year 2016.
The city of Sandy Springs last month approved an agreement with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office to house its inmates at its facility in Jasper. Sandy Springs also utilized the city of Pelham for its inmate housing services.
