Old Alabama Road Traffic Shift Set For Aug. 9

The shift is part of a project improving the major thoroughfare in Johns Creek.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- After temporarily suspending a planned traffic shift on Old Alabama Road, the Georgia Department of Transportation has given the green light for the change to take place early next week.

The agency said Thursday the shift will now occur at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9. Contractors originally scheduled the shift to occur on that date, but abruptly decided to cancel the change so they could complete utility work related to the project.

The work, GDOT spokesperson Annalysce Baker previously told Patch, reduces the need to close lanes after the shift takes place.

The traffic shift involves eastbound traffic traveling toward S.R. 141/Medlock Bridge Road on Old Alabama Road moving on to the newly paved lanes. The single westbound lane -- traffic traveling toward Jones Bridge Road -- will remain in its current configuration.

The current eastbound lanes will close to allow contractors to build a median and move to the third phase of construction.

The project includes widening Old Alabama Road from three lanes to four lanes separated by a 20-foot wide median.

A 5-foot wide sidewalk will be constructed next to the eastbound lanes and 10-foot multi-use trail will be built adjacent to the westbound lanes. A left turn lane will be added on Medlock Bridge Road to Old Alabama Road.

The project will accommodate the volume of traffic traveling from SR 141/Medlock Bridge Road to Old Alabama Road, GDOT states. There will be message boards in place to inform motorist about the upcoming change.
