Synthetic Turf Field Installation Underway At Newtown Park

Two fields at Newtown Park and one at Shakerag Park will be converted to synthetic turf.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The city of Johns Creek has kicked off the process of converting two fields at Newtown Park to synthetic turf. This process, which began on Sept. 4, includes converting the main soccer field and lacrosse field with the new surface.

Once construction begins, installation is anticipated to take up to 30 days, weather permitting.

Synthetic turf field installation is consistent with the recommendations of the Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan. Additionally, the new turf fields at both locations will allow the upcoming sports seasons to occur with minimal disruption and will enable leagues to increase their play time in conditions that would have otherwise been lost to rain (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Along with the Newtown Park project, the track field at Shakerag Park will be converted to synthetic turf.

Field Turf USA, Inc. is the same company contracted by the Fulton County Schools System for the design and installation of synthetic turf fields used by the school system. The fields at Newtown and Shakerag parks will be designed and installed according to the same specifications and regulations used by the school system.

According to the agreement approved by the Johns Creek City Council, the cost for installation of the three fields will not exceed $2 million. The parks bond, approved by voters in November 2016, will fund the project.
