Crossing Guard Promised After Student Hit Near Kennesaw School

The 12-year-old attempted to cross the street behind a school bus but was hit when a driver used the turn lane to skip traffic.

Cobb County school officials are saying changes are coming to a Kennesaw middle school student was struck by a car while crossing the street on Wednesday.

Palmer Middle School student Nader Abdelwahab, 12, suffered a broken arm and other injuries as he tried to cross Shiloh Road behind a stopped school bus. A teacher, allegedly trying to cut traffic by driving in the center lane well before turning, struck Abdelwahab.

The young man has since had surgery and told WSB-TV he holds no ill will against the teacher that hit him.

In light of the accident, Palmer Middle School Principal Lisa Jackson took to the internet to remind parents about teaching their children how to properly cross the street.

“This includes using well-marked crosswalks and crossing whenever possible at traffic lights to ensure a high level of consistent safety,” Jackson wrote. “I would also like to take this opportunity to caution all motorists in our community that when you drive near the school, you must be conscientious of our students at all times.”

Cobb County Schools says they will add a crossing guard at the school and install more stop arm cameras on buses that operate for Palmer Middle School for added safety of both students and motorists.
