Mostly Mutts Read to Dogs Program Very Popular
Mostly Mutts weekly "Read to Dogs" program has become so popular that it is now scheduled twice a week, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings
This innovative reading program is designed to assist in the adoption of shy and fearful dogs with high anxiety or stress, as well as getting children involved in learning about dog behavior while improving their reading skills. You can see from the photos how much the dogs appreciate the interaction with the kids!
A study in 2010 by researchers at the University of California, Davis confirmed that children who read to Fido really do perform better. Young students who read out loud to dogs improved their reading skills by 12 percent over the course of a 10-week program, while children in the same program who didn't read to dogs showed no improvement.
The Mostly Mutts reading program is hosted by certified dog trainer Emily Shervin of The Gratefull Dog. The program is held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:00-7:30 pm. Space is limited, you must sign up in advance by emailing reading@mostlymutts.org (no drop-offs, parents must stay during reading sessions)
