Southern Museum to Honor Women’s History Month On March 30
The Southern Museum will host an afternoon of living history and education focusing on themes related to current museum exhibits.
KENNESAW, GA -- The Southern Museum, located in downtown Kennesaw, will honor Women’s History Month in March with a new program on March 30, from noon to 5 p.m. Staff will also include biographical stories throughout the museum of women whose lives influenced society during the Civil War or contributed to the railroad industry and beyond.
The Southern Museum will host an afternoon of living history and education focusing on two specific themes related to current museum exhibits, women during the Civil War and the two World Wars of the early 20th century. Local groups, the civilian and medical core of the Georgia Division of Reenactors Association, Inc. and the Peachtree Handspinners Guild, will interpret women’s experiences during the Civil War. Educators will demonstrate and discuss tasks associated with nursing and medical support during the war. The Peachtree Handspinners Guild will provide insight into daily life and chores revolving around textile production. Carol Cain, a Georgia storyteller, educator, and affiliate member of the “American Rosie the Riveter Association”, will share the impact of World War I and II on women, discussing the rise of women workers on the home front and the stories she has collected from actual “Rosies” over the years.
Staff chose the context of the Civil War and World Wars due to their direct connection to existing exhibit elements currently on display in the museum. Dena Bush, Director of Operations, added, “It is our mission to find the personal connection to the stories of our collective history, to go beyond the historical context. Many people are perhaps aware of nursing during the Civil War, or Rosie the Riveter, but we hope to highlight how these large-scale events impacted the individual woman’s daily life, their responses, and how they left a mark of our lives today.”
