County To Upgrade Flashing School Beacons

The units are used to control traffic in school zones. In all, 270 new units will be installed throughout Gwinnett County.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday moved to make schools a little bit safer.

The board awarded a $700,000 contract to upgrade all flashing school beacons across Gwinnett County.

School beacons are used to control traffic in school zones for the safety of drivers and students. The contract will update 270 controller units in 150 school zones.

The county's current flashing beacons were installed in 1999. County officials say the software and hardware they use to operate are dated and not compatible with the rest of the county's traffic-control system.

The new system is cloud-based and will provide two-way communication between the county's traffic-control center and the units.

The $699,397.50 contract, awarded to Temple Inc., calls for installation of the new software, server space and five years of cellular service. Any malfunctions in the software are covered for five years as well.

The upgrades are being paid for with money from Gwinnett County's voter-approved special-purpose, local option sales tax.
