Georgia Gwinnett College Generates $451M For Local Economy: Study

Since 2005, the college has had a $2.7 billion economic impact in Gwinnett County, according to the annual report.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Georgia Gwinnett College generated more than $451 million for county's economy during the 2016 fiscal year, according to a recent economic impact study.

That's an increase of nearly $35 million over the previous year according to the study, which was commissioned by the University System of Georgia.

"GGC has become a catalyst for job creation in the county," said GGC President Stas Preczewski in a news release. "Expanding our reach within the community we serve allows for positive and sustainable economic development."

Conducted by the University of Georgia’s Selig Center for Economic Growth at the Terry College of Business, the study attributes GGC's impact to economic activity which includes 4,596 jobs being created by the college. Spending by the institution and spending by students who attend the institution also contributed to the $451 million figure.

"By fall 2017, the college will surpass 5,000 graduates. Those alumni will go on to become entrepreneurs and gainfully employed citizens in the local community who will drive future economic growth,” said Preczewski.

The annual study, conducted on behalf of the Board of Regents by Jeffrey M. Humphreys, director of the Selig Center, analyzed data collected from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016 to measure the university system's economic impact on the state.
