GGC Explosion Building To Re-Open on Monday

The FBI has closed its investigation, saying no criminal activity was behind the Georgia Gwinnett College blast Monday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- The building that was the site of an explosion at Georgia Gwinnett College this week is set to re-open on Monday.

In a letter to the college community, GGC President Stas Preczewski said cleanup has gone well and that engineers have deemed the building safe to return.

Only the bathroom where the explosion occurred Monday, seriously injuring a food-services worker, will remain closed.

Investigators have said they believe a backup of gases in a sewer pipe may have been the cause for the explosion, which shut down the multi-purpose Building A for a week.

"The FBI has closed the investigation, stating that there is no evidence of criminal intent," Preczewski said in the letter. "Other efforts will continue to determine the exact cause."

He commended GGC faculty and staff for their resilience during the past week, while the busy building has been off limits.

"I must say that I have been extremely impressed by and appreciative of the ingenuity and resourcefulness the campus community has displayed during this time of great inconvenience," he said in the letter.
