Gwinnett Man Tied Up, Sexually Attacked Ex-Girlfriend

He was sentenced to 25 years in prison and life on probation and will be required to register as a sex offender.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A Gwinnett County man will spend years in prison after being convicted of tying up and sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend before threatening to kill himself.

A jury convicted David Kang, 22, of Suwanee, on Thursday on charges of aggravated sexual battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and simple battery. Judge Debra K. Turner sentenced him to 25 years in prison and a lifetime on probation and he will be required to register as a sex offender.

According to testimony and evidence in the case, Kang and his victim had known each other for about three years and had been dating for about six months when she ended the relationship in September of last year. She went to Kang's house to get some of her belongings and some money that Kang owed her.

Kang, who lived with his parents, had arranged for her to come when they would be out of the house. He told her that her belongings would be downstairs and, when she arrived, she left her car running, thinking she would just run in and run back out.

But her things were not downstairs and Kang didn't have the money. He said the cash was upstairs and, when they got there, he choked her and took off her pants. He then used shoelaces to tie her hands and feet and sexually assaulted her.

Kang then began talking about committing suicide, saying he wanted his victim to watch. He started cutting himself with a box cutter and took what he told investigators was 32 Adderall pills. Eventually, he untied his victim and she ran away without her belongings.

She drove to the front of his subdivision and called police. When interviewed by officers, Kang said he "just snapped."
