Lawrenceville, GA β€” November 4, 2014 β€” John Marvel is a man who understands the value of CPR training. He was in good shape for a 52 year old. He exercised consistently and had his blood pressure and cholesterol under control. Then one day in 2009 he collapsed during a workout at his workplace fitness center. Marvel went into full cardiac arrest, but was kept alive with the help of bystanders trained in CPR until emergency personnel arrived and took over.

John Marvel’s story was recently featured on the American Heart Association website as a survivor story. He had a triple bypass and went back to work only because of bystanders who were trained in CPR.

Becoming a victim isn’t just a risk for the middle-aged population. According to the National Safety Council, choking is a leading cause of death among infants. These deaths are often preventable by those who undertook CPR and first aid training. β€œIt’s a common-sense step that anyone can take,” said Tracey , certified CPR instructor. β€œIt’s not just for saving lives, it’s also gives you a sense of personal and social responsibility.”

Corporations can benefit from the team-building and safety improvements provided by CPR and first aid training as well. Medical emergencies and β€œon the job” accidents cost US companies billions per year in lost wages, health care expenses, lawsuits and workers’ compensation claims. Empowering workers to create a safer workplace through training not only sends the message that you care about your workers, it also increases workplace morale.
