Knife-Wielding Man Killed In Gwinnett Police Shooting, GBI Says
The 31-year-old man was accused of moving toward Gwinnett County officers with a knife in hand as they responded to a domestic dispute.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Police say they shot and killed a man accused of wielding a knife near two officers responding to a domestic dispute Thursday in the 600 block of Oaktree Park Court in Lawrenceville.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation have identified the man as Nawras Mahmud, 31, of Lawrenceville.
Gwinnett County Police officers responded around 3:45 p.m. to an Oaktree home after someone reported they were bleeding from the hand and that Mahmud was attempting to stab them, police said.

Responding officers parked several houses down from the home, and as they approached the scene, police said Mahmud left the home while "holding a knife in an offensive manner above his head."
The officers then gave commands to Mahmud to drop the knife, but he continued to move toward one of the officers and ignored commands, the GBI said.

Officers then shot at Mahmud multiple times, hitting him, the GBI said.
Police say the shooting was in self-defense due to Mahmud inching close to the officers.
They provided medical aid to Mahmud until emergency medical workers from Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services arrived on scene, police said. They added the EMS workers were staged nearby due to the 911 caller's reported injury.
Mahmud was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The condition of the 911 caller was not immediately known Friday.
Once the GBI's investigation is completed, the case file will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
