Police: Gwinnett Accountant Scammed Small Businesses

Arlisa Adams Bookman is accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from small businesses in Gwinnett, including an arts academy.

SUWANEE, GA — A Gwinnett County woman is behind bars, accused of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from local businesses, including arts institutions.

Police in Suwanee have arrested Arlisa Adams Bookman, owner of Bookman Accounting and Tax Services. According to a post on the city's Facebook page, Bookman is accused of ripping off multiple small businesses that hired her to handle their bookkeeping, payroll and taxes.

Suwanee Police "currently have several victims that have come forward," according to the post. Anyone else who believed they were victimized by Bookman is urged to contact Suwanee Police detectives at 770-904-7627.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, Suwanee Academy of the Arts is one of the businesses that hired Bookman. By February 24, school officials told Suwanee Police, Bookman had stolen more than $65,000 from the school, the Post reported.

According to Bookman's website, she holds a bachelor's degree from College of Charleston and a masters in accounting from the University of South Carolina. She previously worked for Deloitte & Touche in Charlotte, N.C., according to the website.
