Suspect Captured In Deadly Gwinnett Stabbing

UPDATE: After eluding police overnight, Jesse L. Bodie was captured Tuesday morning at a Kroger supermarket near Stone Mountain.

SUWANEE, GA -- A man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death during a fight Monday in Suwanee has been captured after spending a night on the run.

Jesse L. Bodie, 33, was caught Tuesday morning at the Kroger supermarket at 1227 Rockbridge Rd. near Stone Mountain, according to Gwinett County Police. Officers received a tip early Tuesday that Bodie was at the store, said police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera.

They descended upon the area and arrested Bodie without incident, she said. He is charged with murder and aggravated assault in relation to Monday's stabbing and was being booked Tuesday morning into the Gwinnett County Jail.

Police on Tuesday identified the woman they say was stabbed to death by Bodie as Vera Tulbure, 33, of Suwanee. Tulbure died Monday evening after being rushed to the hospital.

Authorities say Bodie repeatedly stabbed Tulbure during an argument Monday afternoon. The two have a history of domestic disputes and there already was a warrant for Bodie's arrest stemming from a previous incident, according to Pihera.

Police on Monday had saturated the neighborhood around the single-family house in the 3800 block of Crescent Walk Lane in Suwanee. They said at the time that Bodie didn't have access to a car and was likely on foot, and told residents to call 911 if they spot him.

Police were dispatched to the home at about 2:30 p.m. Monday, according to a report. Tulbure was found with multiple stab wounds, and she was taken to the Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where she later died.

Police on Monday made a "reverse 911" call to the neighborhood to warn residents and find out if anyone has seen Bodie, who was believed to be on foot.

On Tuesday, Pihera produced multiple police incident reports involving fights between Bodie and Tulbure. Charges in the incidents ranged from simple assault and battery to identity fraud. At varying times each had taken out protective orders against the other and, at one point, Tulbure reported that Bodie had illegally used her Bank of America checking card.
