ICYMI: Woman Killed After Exiting Vehicle on I-85

Police say Taliah Freeman, of Gainesville, had been the passenger in an early-morning wreck north of Pleasant Hill Road on Saturday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- A woman was killed and a man injured when they were hit after getting out of their vehicle following an early-morning wreck Saturday on Interstate 85 in Gwinnett County.

Gwinnett County Police say Taliah Freeman, 32, of Gainesville, and Steven Haynes, 35, of Monticello, had been in a collision with a tractor-trailer when the 2006 Ford Expedition driven by Haynes spun to a stop in the middle of I-85 just north of Pleasant Hill Road.

Haynes got out of the Expedition to call 911 and Freeman got out to get a personal item from the back seat, police say.

As they were both standing in the interstate, the driver of a 2005 Pontiac Montana struck the Expedition, and both Haynes and Freeman.

Freeman died at the scene, police say, and Haynes was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Pontiac, Jaquin Carranza-Nomura, 48, of Brookhaven, has not been charged in the incident.

"It is never safe to exit your vehicle on the interstate following a collision," police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a news release. "Make every attempt to pull your vehicle onto the shoulder and wait for an officer. If your vehicle is inoperable, turn on your hazard lights, keep your seatbelt on, and wait for a police officer to arrive."

Police are still investigating the first collision. They're asking anyone who may be able to provide detail about it to call the Gwinnett Police accident investigation unit at (678) 442-5623.
