Artist Makes Lilburn Park More Musical

"Lilburn Lyrics" asked residents for their favorite lines from songs, then turned them into art in Lilburn City Park.

LILBURN, GA -- Visiting Lilburn City Park in the near future might just put a song ... or several of them ... in your head.

This week, a local artist installed a public art project at the park featuring Lilburn residents' favorite song lyrics.

"Lilburn Lyrics," by Sonny Franks, is a series of aluminum signs the size of a record album cover. Mounted throughout the city park, each one includes words to a favorite song that a Lilburn resident submitted to the city via social media.

"As a city, we want to do more than provide municipal services. We want to help people feel connected to the place they call home," said Mayor Johnny Crist. "Music is a universal language that touches people on an emotional level. These signs are a creative way for people to connect with each other as they walk through City Park."

The idea for the display originated with a group of citizens assembled by the mayor to brainstorm ideas for public art. The group was inspired by a similar project in Macon.

Residents submitted their favorite lyrics to the city on Facebook and Instagram.

From those submissions, city staff picked lyrics representing a variety of musical genres and eras.

Franks, the owner of Sign Creations, assembled lyrics and graphics in Photoshop, then digitally printed them on scrap aluminum.

The "Lilburn Lyrics" were installed on fixtures like trash cans and benches in the park and along the Camp Creek Greenway this week.
