Amost 9,000 Students Set to Graduate In Gwinnett County

Students from Gwinnett County in the Loganville-Grayson areas will graduate from Grayson, South Gwinnett and Archer high schools.

After 13 years of school life, 9,000 Gwinnett seniors will graduate with the Class of 2011. According to Gwinnett County Public Schools, 8,921 students will graduate from Gwinnett’s 20 high Schools this month, many of them from the Loganville and Grayson area.

As well as Grayson High School, some students from Loganville and Grayson also attend South Gwinnett and Archer high schools in Gwinnett County. Loganville-Grayson Patch will profile the valedictorians and salutatorians from these three schools tomorrow.

While students in the lower grades are getting ready for the brief respite of summer vacation before heading back to continue their schooling, these graduates are getting ready to take on life.

“As a district, we take pride in the Class of 2011 and all that they have accomplished,” said Gwinnett County Public Schools CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. “In addition to recognizing our graduates, I also want to congratulate the parents and teachers who helped support these students throughout their academic careers. And as they move on to achieve their dreams, we all realize that graduation is not the end for these students… only the beginning.”

The report highlights the following achievements from the Class of 2011:

  ·    88% of the students graduating this year report that they plan to continue their education by attending college or postsecondary schools.

  ·    The seniors who plan to continue their education have been offered, as of April of 2011, more than $108 million in academic, athletic, and military scholarships. The majority of that amount, more than $75 million, was earned for academic achievement (that amount does not include the HOPE, Broad or Gates Millennium scholarships). Students earned more than $26.9 million in athletic scholarships, while 15 students who reported having received military academy appointments earned just over $6 million in scholarship monies.

  ·    More than 50% of the graduating class will start their college careers several credits ahead as they participated in Advanced Placement (AP) courses during their high school years. These students took a total of 13,089 AP courses.

  ·     The Class of 2011 also includes 1,905 Honor Graduates, who are graduating with a grade percent average of 90 or better.
