Athens, Georgia 4/28/2012 – Leonardo Marquez sprints for first place in one of the biggest amateur cycling events in the southeast. Teammates Emilio Asconeguy and Brad Parkerson protected Marquez throughout the race, setting him up for the final sprint. Asconeguy claimed second place, and Parkerson just missed the last step on the podium by less than a bike length.

Athens Twilight Criterium started in 1980. The first race consisted of 40 racers, and currently has eight different classes and 150 cyclists competing in the main event. Twilight is a highlight of the pro and amateur cycling season; it is part of the USA CRITS championship series and Georgia Championship Series. The Athens event has always stood apart from other cycling events, drawing over 30,000 spectators and some of cycling's biggest racers.

Leonardo Marquez, Emilio Asconeguy and Brad Parkerson, along with several other competitors, competed in the Saturday morning qualifiers where each class has a limited amount of qualifying places for the evening final race. Marquez was beat by a tire’s width in his qualifier, Parkerson finished 9th in his category, and Asconeguy did much of the work, but still qualified. Before the main event the teammates agreed that they would work for Marquez. Immediately Asconeguy jumped off the front, a tactic that is played in cycling to try and get the other teams to show what their tactics are, then Marquez and Parkerson covered the other riders from the other teams to keep Marquez in position for the sprint finish.
