Forsyth Deputy Shot, Suspect Kills Self

Forsyth County deputies were responding to a call of a domestic dispute on Akins Way Sunday afternoon.

CUMMING, GA — A Forsyth County sheriff's deputy was shot Sunday while investigating a domestic disturbance. The suspect in the shooting later turned the gun on himself, fatally shooting himself during a SWAT standoff.

Deputies had responded to a call of a domestic dispute at a home home on Akins Way, according to Forsyth County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Douglas Rainwater.

When they arrived, they were trying to get a man to come outside and speak with them when "they came under significant gunfire," according to Rainwater.

As deputies were returning fire, one of them was shot in the legs. He was immediately evacuated to a local hospital, where he was treated Sunday evening for non-life threatening injuries.

By 8:20 p.m., the deputy was home with his family recovering, Rainwater said.

The sheriff's office was not identifying the deputy Sunday evening.

A standoff at the home continued until late Sunday, after a SWAT team had been called in. Also responding to the situation were a Cherokee County SWAT team, members of a north Fulton County SWAT team, Georgia State Patrol officers and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Rainwater said that, after attempts at negotiation failed, the shooting suspect took his own life. No one else other than the deputy was injured during the standoff.

The GBI was investigating the scene late Sunday.
