GCPS Students Competing in Readers Rally

More than 100 school teams will participate in the literary quiz-bowl competition for student readers in grades 4-12.

This Saturday, March 3, more than 100 teams from schools across the county will compete in the seventh annual Gwinnett Readers Rally.

The literary quiz-bowl competition for student readers in grades 4-12 will begin at 9 a.m. with the competition continuing through 2:30 p.m. at Berkmar High School, 405 Pleasant Hill Road, in Lilburn.

Readers will compete in 10-student teams. They will read books on a pre-selected list and will answer questions about the books. High school teams read the books nominated for the Georgia Peach Award for Teen Readers each year.Middle school teams read those nominated for the Georgia Children’s Book Award each year and Elementary school teams read selections from a list created each year by a Gwinnett committee.

There will 102 teams, representing an increase over the 97 teams that competed in 2011, vying for the countywide title this year. The 102 teams represent 63 elementary schools, 24 middle schools, and 15 high schools. At the conclusion of the event, four elementary school, two middle school, and two high school teams will earn spots to compete in the final challenge.

The winning teams in 2011 were from Minor Elementary, Osborne Middle, and Berkmar High schools.

The Championship Readers Rally competition will take place Thursday, March 8, at the GCPS TV Studio at the Gwinnett County Public Schools Instructional Support Center in Suwanee. The final competition will air on GCPS TV Monday, March 12, through Sunday, March 18, at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.
