GDOL Offers Help To Job Seekers

During the month of May, the Georgia Department of Labor is focussing efforts on assisting job-seekers with Résumé-writing in an effort to help them find employment.

In order to help improve Georgia’s unemployment numbers, the state Department of Labor is launching a month-long effort to help job seekers boost their chances for employment.

Labeled RésuMAY, the effort will continue throughout the month of May. It will focus on résumé-writing tools and employment-related services available year-round through GDOL offices throughout the state. GDOL career centers, Vocational Rehabilitation offices, and Workforce Investment Boards will participate.

“Résumé-writing assistance is one of the most popular and valuable services that Georgia’s workforce system offers,” said Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. “Studies have shown that an employer makes a decision about a job seeker within the first 30 seconds of looking at a résumé. That’s why a well-written résumé is critical, otherwise the applicant may not get an opportunity to interview for a job. Through RésuMAY, we’ll be able to better equip job seekers to market their skills to employers.”

GDOL will provide resources at the state level that include Type Explore Discover (Ask TED) – a live online chat, which is scheduled for May 5 and will be devoted to résumés, a series of new on-line résumé-writing podcasts, and new on-line resources and marketing materials for job seekers to download. In addition, local career centers and other area one-stop centers will offer résumé-writing services such as résumé workshops, employer-led feedback discussions, résumé contests and one-on-one intensive résumé sessions.

RésuMAY is targeted to general job seekers, older workers, professionals and long-term unemployed. Plans also are under way to offer these résumé-writing activities at career expos, schools, military installations, churches and libraries.
