Grayson 'Boots' Snellville in Hunger Challenge

The Grayson community responded to Mayor Allison Wilkerson’s call to stock the shelves of the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry.

A challenge was put forth to the City of Snellville in December to make a difference in the communities served by the ministry and the combined donations were delivered on Jan. 19 to be counted by volunteers.

The two cities collected more than 22,000 items in recent weeks to stock the shelves at the ministry with food and necessities for those with needs. Though all agree that the ministry is the big winner, Grayson can claim victory for the 2015 challenge with a count of 15,157 in donations!

“We’re giving hunger the boot in Grayson,” said Wilkerson in a press release, “but we couldn’t do it without the support of our community partners!”

Champion Self Storage provided a truck to collect and store food at Grayson City Hall and Perry Eidson with Stone Mountain Twice the Ice provided transportation for collection. The Grayson Coffee House, Precision Planning, The Hail Mary Sports Pub, McDonald’s, Brand Bank and Creative Insurance all opened their doors as collections sites – giving the city the edge.

“Our secret weapon, though, was the significant participation of our schools, our churches and our neighbors,” said Wilkerson.

Citizens and members of the administration from both cities spent the day in service at the Co-Op in honor of Dr. King’s birthday assisting volunteers with sorting and shelving.

About the Campaign: Give Hunger the Boot was created by Snellville Council Member Dave Emanuel and his wife Kathy. The initiative serves those who have needs in our community by collecting and donating foods and items of need to the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry, located in Grayson. Snellville will build a parade float representing the Co-Op and Council Members of both cities will ride on the float in the Snellville Days and Grayson Day parades.
