Grayson, Roswell Senators Using Playoff Game to Feed the Hungry

State Sen. P.K. Martin challenged his colleague, John Albers, to collect food before the state semifinal matchup.

A pair of Georgia state senators are hoping to turn Friday’s state semifinal football game between Grayson and Roswell into a chance to help feed the hungry.

Sen. P.K. Martin, of Lawrenceville, whose district includes Grayson High, challenged Sen. John Albers, of Roswell, to collect and donate as much canned and packaged food as possible before Friday’s showdown between the undefeated squads at Grayson Stadium.

The state senator whose high school loses will have to deliver all of the donations and give a $250 cash donation to a local food co-op -- while wearing the rival team’s jersey.

“During the Christmas Season, some in our community will go to sleep hungry,” Martin said in a news release. “Senator Albers and I are committed to doing our part to ensure our local food co-op has the necessary resources to bring food and holiday joy to those in need.”

The senators are encouraging local businesses and community groups, as well as individuals, to participate in the food-drive wager. Donations can be given to either of the senators or dropped off at Grayson Community Stadium.

Both Grayson and Roswell bring unblemished 13-0 records into the semifinal matchup, which is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The winner will head to the Georgia Dome to take on the winner of the Colquitt County-Mill Creek semifinal for the Class AAAAAA state championship.
