GCPS was awarded the money after winning the 2010 Broad Prize for Urban Education from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. The Broad Prize is awarded annually to the urban school district that demonstrates the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing income and ethnic achievement gaps. The previous year GCPS was also in the running but came up short, taking home $250,000 in scholarship money. However, in 2010 the school district was the big winner.
“Although the Broad Prize recognizes urban school district efforts on the whole, the beneficiaries of the Broad Prize funds are the students themselves,” Quintana said.
