But fire officials say the fire burned away part of the home's roof and did heavy damage to the attic and second floor.

There was smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the house.

Gwinnett County fire officials say it appears the lightning may have hit electrical components in the attic, starting the blaze.

Neighbors who witnessed the lightning strike called 911 and kicked in the front door of the home to make sure no one was inside.
